Student Federal Convention to Mark Hamilton Bicentennial

The Alexander Hamilton Bicentennial Commission has approved a plan for an American Students Constitutional Convention to be held next June in Philadelphia's historic Independence Hall. It was drafted by its Advisory Committee on Contests and Awards of which Dr. Bower Aly of the University of Missouri is Chairman. In addition, the Commission plans to provide for scholarships in connection with this program. The whole program, which is for high school students, is to be financed by private subscription. The Commission whose chairman is Senator Karl Mundt has been authorized by Congress to receive private funds for such a purpose. "The American Students Constitutional Convention will be made up of 55 delegates as was the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention in 1787," according to Senator Mundt. There will be one delegate from each of the 48 States, from the District of Columbia, and one from each territory and possessions. Each of these student delegates will be chosen in competition in his State or area. Groundwork activities for these competitions are already in progress. Students have been supplied with study material on Hamilton and the Constitution of the United States.

"The Alexander Hamilton Commemorative Scholarships, for which private funds are being pledged, are, according to the plan to be awarded in each competition to the high school student who is judged best to exemplify the kind of contributions that Alexander Hamilton made to public affairs. It is the intention of the Commission that at a later date a similar program will be developed for students in college." The Commission has always felt that a substantial part of the cost of centennial observances should be defrayed from private sources.

In addition to Dr. Aly, members of the Advisory Committee on Contests and Awards are: Dr. F. Kenneth Brasted, President of University of Dallas, Dallas, Tex.; Honorable Samuel M. Brownell, Superintendent of Schools, Detroit, Mich.; Dr. Thorrel B. Fest, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo.; Professor Bruno E.
