This series relates to funds and status of various branches of the service, pay raises and selective service system and represents the Korean War years and the Vietnam War years.

The so-called "Thurmond Controversy" resulting from a speech on the Senate floor by Senator Strom Thurmond on July 26, 1961 is detailed in this series. Senator Thurmond objected to the order of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara that the military should stop presenting Anti-Communist seminars to personnel.
